Amazon EC2 (Amazon Elastic Compute Cloud) is a web service that provides secure, scalable computing capacity in the cloud. It is designed to make it easy for developers to do web-scale cloud computing. Amazon EC2’s simple web service interface lets you acquire and configure capacity with minimal friction. This gives you complete control over your computing resources and lets you work in Amazon’s proven computing environment.
Amazon EC2 offers the broadest and deepest computing platform with your choice of processors, storage, networking, operating systems, and purchasing models. We offer the fastest processors in the cloud and are the only cloud with 400 Gbps Ethernet. We have the most powerful GPU instances for machine learning training and graphics workloads, as well as the lowest cost per inference in the cloud. More SAP, HPC, machine learning, and Windows workloads run on AWS than any other cloud. Click here to learn what’s new with Amazon EC2.
Nearly 400 items for every business need
24 regions and 77 zones available globally
Only cloud provider that supports macOS
Choice of Intel, AMD, and Arm-based processors
Reliable, scalable, on-demand infrastructure
- Scaling up or down capacity in seconds, not hours
- SLA commitment of 99.99% availability for each Amazon EC2 region. Each region consists of at least 3 availability zones
- The AWS Region/AZ model is recognized by Gartner as the recommended approach for running enterprise applications that require high availability
“Since March, we’ve seen a 2-3% increase in market volume. We’re automatically turning on and off up to 100,000 compute nodes per day. We couldn’t handle this increase in volume in our internal data center.”
Steve Randich
Executive Vice President and Chief Information Officer, FINRA
Secure computing for your applications
- Using AWS system virtualization, Nitro is offloaded to dedicated hardware and software, minimizing the attack surface
- Lockdown security model eliminates administrative access and eliminates the possibility of human error and tampering
- AWS supports 89 security standards and compliance certifications, including PCI-DSS, HIPAA/HITECH, FedRAMP, GDPR, FIPS 140-2, and NIST 800-171, which is significantly more than other cloud providers
“We looked at many public clouds, but AWS scored highest against our core criteria, which included stability, security, and breadth of services.”
Lawrence Fong
GM IT Solutions, Cathay Pacific
Flexible Cost Optimization Options
- With On Demand, pay only for the compute you need. Get up to 40% better performance with AWS Graviton2-based instances or 10% lower costs with AMD-based instances.
- Amazon EC2 Spot can reduce costs by up to 90% or accelerate performance for fault-tolerant workloads like big data, containers, web services, and CI/CD.
- AWS Savings Plans Save up to 72% on Amazon EC2 use cases by family, size, platform, tenancy, or AWS region.
“We tested the new M6g instances using the industry standard LMbench and some Java benchmarks and saw up to a 50% improvement over the M5 instances. We are excited to introduce AWS Graviton2-based Amazon EC2 instances.”
Ed Hunter
Director of Operating Systems and Performance, Netflix
Migrating and building apps is easy
- Get started quickly with AWS Migration Tools, AWS Managed Services, or Amazon Lightsail
- AWS Professional Services, AWS Support, and AWS Training and Certification help you along the way
- Tens of thousands of APN Partners to help companies build, market, and sell their AWS offerings
“It was easy to manage – it was very simple to load a machine into the operating system and then simply resize it based on need.”
Sadao Matsuda
CEO SAP IT, VWCO
Building blocks
Amazon EC2 offers the broadest and deepest instance base, using the latest compute, storage,
and networking technologies, engineered for high performance and security.
Innovate Faster and Increase Security with AWS Nitro System
AWS Nitro System is the foundational platform for our next generation of EC2 instances, offloading many of the functions of traditional virtualization to dedicated hardware and software to deliver high performance, high availability, and high security while also reducing the cost of virtualization. Nitro System is a rich set of building blocks that can be assembled in many ways, giving us the flexibility to design and rapidly deliver a variety of new EC2 instances with a broader selection of compute, storage, memory, and networking options.

Choice of Processors
Choose from the latest Intel Xeon, AMD EPYC, and AWS Graviton processors to find the best balance of performance and price for your workloads. EC2 instances using NVIDIA GPUs and AWS Inferentia are also available for workloads that require fast computing, such as machine learning, gaming, and graphics-intensive applications.

High-Performance Storage
Amazon Elastic Block Store (EBS) provides easy-to-use, high-performance block storage for use with Amazon EC2. Amazon EBS is available in a variety of volume types that allow you to optimize storage performance and cost for your workloads. Many EC2 instance types also include options for local NVMe SSD storage for applications that require low latency.

Advanced Networking
AWS is the first and only cloud to offer 400 Gbps Advanced Ethernet networking for compute instances. Advanced networking enables you to get significantly higher packets per second (PPS), less network jitter, and lower latency. For high-performance computing (HPC) applications, Elastic Fabric is a network interface for Amazon EC2 instances that provides low-latency, high-bandwidth connectivity between compute nodes to help scale applications across thousands of cores.

Choose a Purchasing Model
We offer a variety of purchasing model options with On-Demand, Spot Instances, and Savings Plans. With Spot Instances, you can save up to 90% on fault-tolerant workloads. With the Savings Plan, you can save up to 72% with committed and flexible usage across EC2, Fargate, and Lambda . You can also optimize your costs with recommendations for EC2 using AWS Compute Optimizer or through a tool like Cost Explorer.
