Introduction

GTA 6 is set in 2025, and Rockstar Games is taking us to the sun-drenched streets of Vice City. The unveiling of the first official GTA 6 trailer gave us a very impressive look at Leonidas, and hinted at some of the wild sights and sounds the state has to offer.

If you're looking for more insight into the trailer, you'll want to check out the GTA 6 trailer details. In it, we try to pick up some story details about Lucia - the main protagonist of Grand Theft Auto 6 - as well as get a better sense of the kind of scale Rockstar is going for. It's all incredibly impressive, and there's a lot to dig into. So with that in mind, you should read on to find out everything you need to know about GTA 6 ahead of its release next year.

The GTA 6 reveal trailer is exactly what we hoped it would be. While Rockstar had originally set the GTA 6 trailer release date for Tuesday, December 5th, a leak has forced the publisher to give the world a much-anticipated first look at the new Grand Theft Auto a little sooner. The GTA 6 trailer, which you can watch above, gives us our first look at the return to Vice City and two new heroes.

GTA 6 release date speculation: All eyes are on 2025

Rockstar has confirmed that the GTA 6 release date is set for 2025. The news was released as part of a teaser trailer, which noted that Grand Theft Auto 6 is set to release TBC 2025 – no further details were provided on when.

Before the reveal trailer was released, internet sleuths were making some pretty accurate guesses. Multiple sources have confirmed a rumor that GTA 6 would be released in 2025, which was part of a larger leak that suggested Grand Theft Auto 6 would be set in a modern-day city.

Interestingly, Rockstar owner Take-Two is still saying GTA 6 will be released by March 2025 while not saying anything about it. «We are confident that we are positioning our business for a significant milestone in fiscal 2025, which we believe will include new levels of operational performance,» says CEO Strauss Zelnick. This significant increase in revenue forecast is apparently due to the release of GTA 6.

However, there's a new report via Kotaku that suggests Rockstar is concerned that GTA 6 production could be delayed and could affect the 2025 release date. Rockstar has returned all of its employees to full-time five-day workweeks in the office, which many of its developers have expressed concerns about, especially when it comes to the potential impact on the sequel. Fall 2025 is currently looking more realistic than spring 2025, but we'll have to wait for more news from Rockstar before we can officially know more.

GTA6: PS5 and Xbox Series X/S platforms confirmed

So far, it has been confirmed that GTA 6 will be coming to PS5 and Xbox Series X/S at launch. The news was announced via an official press release from Take Two, which states: “GTA 6 will be coming to PlayStation 5 computer entertainment systems and Xbox Series X|S games and entertainment systems in 2025.” As revealed in the official press release, GTA 6 is currently only coming to PS5 and Xbox Series X, and will not be coming to PS4 or Xbox One in 2025 – making it a current-gen exclusive.

What happens with the release of GTA 6 PC?

There's currently no mention of the game launching on PC, which may indicate it's following a similar path to some previous GTA games that were released on consoles first, before being released on PC at a later date.

We won't be holding our breath for a fast-track PC release either, as a former developer has said that GTA 6's PC release will likely take a while, with PS5 taking priority as Rockstar focuses on what sells. This has been confirmed by a former developer, who said that the game's PC launch probably won't come for a long time.

GTA 6 Characters: Introducing Lucia

During the official trailer, we got to know the protagonists of GTA 6, focusing on the first female character in GTA 6, Lucia. While there's still a lot to learn about her as a character, the trailer gives us some hints by showing her wearing a prison uniform, which tells us that she's clearly had trouble with the law. Not only that, but Lucia is shown on multiple occasions with an unnamed male character who seems to be playing a major role in the sequel - while in the past he's been unofficially referred to as Jason and James. His name hasn't been confirmed, but it seems like the pair share a common bond and speak of trust as they get caught up in a crime together.

GTA 6 location: Return to Vice City

GTA 6 takes us back to Vice City. While the original game took place in 1986, this new version is set in 2025, in a modern setting. Rockstar revealed that we're heading to the state of Leonida, "home to the neon-drenched streets of Vice City and beyond." Vice City, which is set to be "the biggest and most immersive evolution of Grand Theft Auto yet," seems to be part of a larger plot that will make up GTA 6.

The trailer has already given us a glimpse of Vice City, which is more beautifully rendered than ever, with a take on rural Florida that's as chaotic as the real thing. While there are some familiar locations like Starfish Island, we'll have to wait and see if we get to visit old haunts like the Malibu Club, the Ocean View Hotel, Little Haiti.

As we saw in the trailer, fans have already been comparing the new trailer to the original Vice City locations, which shows how amazing the updated location detail is.

GTA 6 Announcement: When was GTA 6 confirmed?

The first GTA 6 announcement came in February 2022, when Rockstar Games announced that GTA 5 and GTA Online were “well underway” as part of an update to the community. Stating that Grand Theft Auto 6 was in active development, Rockstar said: “On behalf of our entire team, we thank you all for your support and we can’t wait to step into the future with you!”

In August 2022, Rockstar parent company Take-Two Interactive reaffirmed that development on GTA 6 was “progressing well” as part of the company’s financial results report. Take-Two CEO Strauss Zelnick made big promises for what GTA 6 would achieve: “With the development of the next installment in the Grand Theft Auto series, the Rockstar Games team is determined to once again set the creative benchmark for the series, the industry, and for all of entertainment, just as the label has done with each of its flagship releases.”

GTA 6 gameplay

Since Rockstar has yet to release a gameplay trailer for GTA 6, it's hard to say for sure how the new game will play out and how it will innovate on Grand Theft Auto 5. However, it's clear from the early development footage that has leaked that Rockstar is at least testing and playing around with some of the new mechanics. For example, it looks like a new set of stealth mechanics have been introduced - with footage showing characters crawling in prone positions and even carrying corpses.
